He is responsible for leading custom projects along California’s coastline and mountain ranges, and has developed a strong expertise in interior design and architecture. His determined leadership and design influence continues to shape new generations of projects and people at Laney. Houses are equipped several times a week, and volunteers are given the address of their assignments the day before. The families arrive in the afternoon and volunteers have the pleasure of welcoming them to their newly transformed homes.

She found a house she could afford, but there was nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were making nests on the floor where they were going to sleep. I cried my eyes out on my way to picking up my children from day care thinking about those kids sleeping on the floor that night while I was tucking my children into their big beautiful beds. While in line at carpool, I started asking people if they had extra items they could donate. I went around with my friend Ana in her pick-up truck and started collecting items to furnish this home. We called our friends, our neighbors, called people we didn’t know — asking for beds, linens, kitchen items.

Graduated with a masters in architecture, Logan began his career in Greenpoint, New York before relocating to Los Angeles. With a background in hospitality and 3D modeling, he strives to express subtle, concise, and timeless designs that communicate a comprehensive narrative. Logan’s strong intuition and disciplined, active listening skills enable him to build strong client relations and deliver clean, precise work. We also hire security guards during the “Deco Day” to ensure our volunteers and staff are safe. With an educational background in chemistry and architecture, Jacob’s unique skillset weaves elegant design out of complex parameters. His approach involves intensive research, pinpointing interactive opportunities between objects in order to craft a purposeful, elevated homes.

I told her I felt like a train without a track and she helped guide me every step of the way. I attribute a ton of my success to her guidance. It would take an average Humble client 18 years to save enough money to furnish a home in the way we do in just a few hours. Since 2009, our staff and volunteers have turned moving in into moving forward. Since arriving in San Diego in 2018, Humble Design has helped more than 300 clients to change their lives for good. Mebra Kisaka is an accomplished business professional with extensive experience in organizational development, strategic planning, and team building. A Los Angeles native, she graduated with her master’s from USC’s Marshall School of Business, and now serves as the studio’s chief operating officer. Her role encompasses oversight of the studio’s growth, its various departments, and ultimately, its financial success. While she has built a reputation for solving strategic challenges and cultivating high performance teams, her true specialty is aligning people and processes to unlock focused performance.

When people around you are asked for help, they become engaged in your mission and will help you carry the ball down the field. When things look bleak, look toward your team. Surround yourself with people you like — they will become your safety net as well as your staff. Designer Jamie Konker loves the opportunity to share her talents as shown in the before and after shots above. I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We don’t have a bottom line, or stockholders. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Did you face any challenges when starting the business? Of course funding is a challenge for most nonprofits, but our biggest challenge was that Humble Design became a logistics nightmare.

I was born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in San Diego. I grew up in a household where it was extremely important to get a good education and to choose a field where you could succeed in life. When I told my parents I wanted to be an artist, they double-gulped but, ultimately, got behind the idea and sent me to art programs.
